10 helpful cooking tips and tricks

When it comes to cooking, who doesn’t love time savers and tricks that make food preparation easier?  Taking a few simple precautions can keep food from burning or going to waste.  Other suggestions on this list can cut down on cooking time.  The following list includes tips for baking, boiling, freezing and preserving food.

  1. Place a pan of water underneath baked goods to keep them from browning too fast on the bottom.
  2. Place a slice of bread at the bottom of a cookie jar or cookie tin to keep homemade cookies soft and chewy.
  3. Use muffin or cupcake tins to cook pre-sized individual servings of casseroles, stuffing, etc.
  4. Add a few tablespoons of vinegar to water when boiling eggs to make them easier to peel.
  5. Use a piece of bread to safely soak up excess oil or liquid from a dish without changing the taste of the food.
  6. Freeze pan drippings from roasted chicken or beef in ice cube trays to use later for broth.
  7. Freeze left over coffee to use as ice cubes in coffee drinks.
  8. Spray non-stick cooking spray on spoons and in measuring cups to keep peanut buter from sticking.
  9. Use packaged coleslaw mix in dishes that require shredded or chopped cabbage.
  10. Freeze fresh herbs in water or broth to keep them from rotting; use the herbs in soups and stews.
